Biblical Slavery? A Defense of the Bible on the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation

Today marks the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation.

In talking with others, especially young adults, it is a good time to address slavery in the Bible. Particularly, what was slavery in the NT and why doesn’t Paul abolish it? This article does an excellent job. Read the whole thing.

Both Keller and Carson make the point that ancient slavery was not the same as American slavery.

This is a huge issue for young adults to understand for several reasons:

1. Homosexuality – I have heard it argued that “The Christian understanding changed on the biblical understanding of slavery and women’s rights. Similarly, in a few years we will also have a more progressive view of  homosexuality.”

2. (Related to #1) The Bible’s Perceived Social Backwardness – Although conservative Christians would […]

Historical Evidence That Jesus Existed

As a young person growing up in a Christian home, I remember wondering if there was evidence outside of the gospels if Jesus of Nazareth ever existed.  Between Two Worlds has an interview with Craig Bloomberg. In that article is this paragraph.

One can easily find blogs and websites claiming that Jesus never existed. Even if we didn’t have the New Testament, what would we know about Jesus from non-Christian sources?

The best source here for a book-length answer is Robert van Voorst’s Jesus outside the New Testament (Eerdmans, 2000). Here is my composite summary:

Jesus was a first-third of the first-century Jew, who lived in Israel, was born out of wedlock, whose ministry intersected with that of John the Baptist, who became a popular teacher and wonder-worker, who gathered […]

The Power of Apologetics and Worldview

I was recently asked to give the keynote at the RI Homeschool Convention.
In that talk, I delivered a summarized version of the material in the booklet, The Power of Apologetics. Below is the audio.  I am working on a version that will have better audio quality. But for now this is what we have. Enjoy!

11 Prophesies of Jesus’ Lineage and Birth

We can take great comfort in the prophesies of Jesus’ lineage and birth. Some skeptics might argue that Jesus took the role of Messiah upon himself and was able to persuade others to follow him. However, these skeptics ignore the predictions made about the Messiah that Jesus had no way of controlling. We had no control over who our parents were and where we were born. In this Christmas season, take great comfort in the fulfillment of the prophesies. Scripture says The Messiah would be…

The Son of a Woman
And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.  Genesis 3:15

The Son of a Virgin
The Lord himself will give […]

Six Minutes to Speak – An Apologetics Student’s Thoughts

This is a powerful video that explains the real purpose of the Apologetics Competition. This video was created for use by The Apollos Project as we equip students to stand strong in the faith. I was in the room when Ali gave this speech. Enjoy.

While here, you might also check out resources here and here to help in this category. And consider other resources to help disciple your children in the faith, including signing up for blog feed to your mail box. (See the far right column, top of the page.)

Why Do We Let Them Dress Like This?

Interesting article at the Wall Street Journal (HT:BTW)

Why Do We Let Them Dress Like That: Women of a liberated generation wrestle with their eager-to-grow-up-daughters – and their own pasts.

Interesting to see non-Christians wrestling with the way they are letting their daughters dress. Even more interesting to peek over the shoulder of non-Christian women who are willing to verbalize the regret for their sexually promiscuous past. The writer is wrestling with her own advice and her past. Why does her generation of women let their girls dress so provocatively.
I have a different theory. It has to do with how conflicted my own generation of women is about our own past, when many of us behaved in ways that we now regret. A woman I know, with two […]

Why Does God Allow Evil and Suffering

The earthquake in Japan is a chance for parents to bring up the philosophical issue that needs to be addressed: Why does God allow evil and suffering?

Two posts are helpful.

Evil and suffering is “everyone’s” problem. That is to say, we can give the Christian answer but athiests and Buddists and others must give their answer also. Ultimately those answers are less satisfying.

And of course, Desiring God provides some helpful, biblical, answers for us. Of particular interest:

God does nothing without an infinitely wise and good purpose:
He is wise and brings disaster (Isaiah 31:2);

The Lord is good (Psalm 100:5);

All his works are right and his ways are just (Daniel 4:37).
Therefore, God has a good and all-wise purpose for the heart-rending calamity in Japan on March 11, 2011 […]

The Universe Around Us – A New View

Creation and our Creator are awe-inspiring. Truly, the heavens do declare the glory of God. Let’s present this awesome look to our children. Check out this slide show that moves from the fartherest reaches of the universe to the tiniest reaches of the atom. Amazing.

Do We Get “How Great is Our God?”

Do we really get how great God is? Do we really know what it is to fear him. May we live in the fear of the Lord and pass it on to our naturally self-centered children!

Wayne Grudem’s Lectures Online

Wayne Grudem has gone through his systematic theology book in his Sunday School class in Scottsdale, Arizona. These excellent lectures would be helpful for my apologetics class or to redeem your commute. This is also a good time to recommend any of his three works for purchase. They are viewable at The Apollos Project bookstore.

Enjoy.
