A Biblical Prayer – Greater Love and Greater Discernment

And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. Phil 1:9

How shall we pray for our children and ourselves?

Paul tells the Philippian church that he is praying for them that their love will increase. Sin is naturally selfish, focusing our attention on self and making us the center of our universe. The exact opposite of that is love for God and love for our neighbor (Matthew 22:37-39). That amount of love is not static, it can grow and abound.

But […]

Spurgeon on Praying in the Holy Spirit

I thought this was very helpful for praying parents. – Chap

“Praying in the Holy Ghost.” — Jude 20

Mark the grand characteristic of true prayer-“In the Holy Ghost.”

The seed of acceptable devotion must come from heaven’s storehouse. Only the prayer which comes from God can go to God. We must shoot the Lord’s arrows back to him. That desire which he writes upon our heart will move his heart and bring down a blessing, but the desires of the flesh have no power with him.

Praying in the Holy Ghost is praying in fervency. Cold prayers ask the Lord not to hear them. Those who do not plead with fervency, plead not at all. As well speak of lukewarm fire as of lukewarm prayer-it is essential that […]

Praying Daily for Our Sons in October

This seems like a good challenge (HT Challies) and I plan to take it. I have joined the Facebook group. If this works well, I might do something similar for The Apollos Project. Check it out.

Also, check out this ap for the iphone. I have not used it yet but am thinking about it.

Encouraging You and Your Child to Pray for Your Pastors

A good word here. HT Challies.

I woke this morning with words of prayer on my mouth. Not prayers for me or prayers for my friends, but prayers for my pastors. I go to a large church with many pastors and their job is difficult. They shepherd, lead, teach, preach, train, study, repent, and live very publicly….

Your life is wrought with struggle, pain, study, leadership, discipleship, doubt, fear—many of the same things your pastors deal with, but think of how different your leadership would be if you knew you had people who were actively praying for you? When I remember that Jesus intercedes for me, it’s a game changer. When I know one of you is praying for me, it puts flesh on that intangible intercession […]

A Parenting Goal to Pray for: Backbone and Courage

Adam Griffin writes that a goal for a parent is that their child stand against the world. As a result, they will be hated. (HT: Challies) Shocking! But biblical.

If God graciously saves my Oscar, people will call him a bigot and a homophobe. Some will ridicule him as a male chauvinist as they scorn his “sexist” beliefs. He’ll be despised as closed-minded for saying that Jesus Christ is not only God but the only God. He will probably meet a girl who insults his manhood or considers him old fashioned for waiting until marriage to have sex. His peers will think him a prude. Bullies will call him a coward. His integrity will draw insults like “goody two shoes” (I don’t even know what that […]

A Mom’s Gospel Oriented Prayer

We pray often for our children. But how should we pray? For safety?  A good day?

Christina Fox pens an excellent prayer at The Gospel Coalition site.

The heart of her prayer is

The most important prayer I can pray for them is that they would see their sin and need for you. I ask that you humble them before you. Pierce their heart so they would see their need for the gospel of grace. I pray that they would know there is nothing they can do to earn your love or to keep your love. Each time they stumble into sin, draw them back to the gospel and foot of the cross. I pray that they would be overcome and overwhelmed by your love for them, that […]

Questions for You and Your Child to Ask When You Think About Ministry

Children are not just to be ministered to. They are also capable of ministry. We need to train them that to give to the Lord’s church. As a family, we stand against the common Christian culture by not being consumers but givers at our local church.

Here are two suggestions on a simple way to start:

In prayer, ask “Lord, what do you want to do through us to build up    insert your church name      .  Pray that prayer individually or as a family and see what the Lord puts on your heart.
In addition, ask the leadership of your church, “What can we do to help build up our church?”

Make sure there are opportunities to minister together as a family as well as separately. […]

Ruling With Christ in Prayer

Harold Burchett’s Bringing Christ Back ends a chapter entitled Ruling With Christ in Prayer with these words:
In prayer we practice God’s presence and share in extending his providence.

This relationship, like a good marriage, needs both daily investment and also the fostering of special times in extra attention–like arising at night to express love and worship, or setting aside selected hours or periods of time devoted to fasting and prayer.

Each time Scripture is read, ask, “How does this passage impact my praying?” or “What is God saying here that I should turn into prayer?”

Finally, prayer is simply the way of living by faith, walking in the Spirit, and getting on with God.
May prayer inform our parenting and our life. May we foster daily investment and times […]
