Verse List – Are We Listening to God?

Note: These verse lists are given as quick, topical studies to help moms and dads do studies on a date with their child, to shepherd an individual child, or for family devotions.

Last time we saw that God is a speaking God. But why don’t we hear him? The problem is on our end. Sin hinders our listening. Our listening gets clogged by sin. Other times, we don’t really care to listen. Let’s heed these commands and warnings to listen to the Lord.

1. Matthew 17:5 This is my Son, whom I love, listen to him.

2. John 10:27 My sheep listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me.

3. Mark 4:24-25 Consider carefully what you hear….Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, […]

Verse List – God is a Speaking God

Note: These verse lists are given as quick, topical studies to help moms and dads do studies on a date with their child, to shepherd an individual child, or for family devotions.

God is a speaking God. It is good to remind our children of this. There is no difference between a God who is not there and a God who never speaks. Sometimes our children (and we) have a sense that God is silent. Yet Scripture proclaims he is there and he is not silent. The question is, “Are we listening?”

Are we listening to God in creation? – Psalm 19:1-4. The heavens declare the glory of God. The skies proclaim the work of his hand. Day after day they pour forth speech.

Are we listening to […]

Verse List – Are You Easily Corrected?

Note: These verse lists are given as quick, topical studies to help moms and dads do studies on a date with their child, to shepherd an individual child, or for family devotions.

I recently sat down with one of my children to address the issue of correctability. All I had to do was look at one chapter of Proverbs – chapter 15.

Proverbs 15:5 – whoever heeds correction shows prudence.
Proverbs 15:10 – He who hates correction will die.
Proverbs 15:12 – A mocker resents correction; he will not consult the wise.
Proverbs 15:31 – He who listens to a life-giving rebuke will be at home among the wise.
Proverbs 15:32 – He who ignores discipline despises himself, but whoever heeds correction gains understanding.

And for good measure, I just came across […]

Search the Scriptures

From Charles Spurgeon – Morning and Evening, June 09. To urge on our children who have always had the Word of God.
“Search the Scriptures.”—John 5:39.
HE Greek word here rendered search signifies a strict, close, diligent, curious search, such as men make when they are seeking gold, or hunters when they are in earnest after game. We must not rest content with having given a superficial reading to a chapter or two, but with the candle of the Spirit we must deliberately seek out the hidden meaning of the word.

Holy Scripture requires searching—much of it can only be learned by careful study. There is milk for babes, but also meat for strong men.The rabbis wisely say that a mountain of matter hangs upon every word, yea, upon every title […]

Advice to a 13-Year Old Who Wants to Go Deeper in the Word

John Piper has published a letter he wrote to a 13-year old girl that wanted to go deeper in the Scripture. His suggestions:

1. Read the Bible as a whole. Use a Bible Reading Plan like the Discipleship Journal plan to keep track of where you are reading.

2. Focus on some unit of Scripture to go deeper.

You might want to do this through memorization.

Or write that section out long-hand.

3. Get a good study bible like the ESV Study Bible and use it.

4. Pray as you come to the word: Incline my ear, Open my eyes, Unite my heart.

Share this with your children. Read the whole thing.

An Easy Secret to Memorizing Large Portions of Scripture

I have recently come across an article on a great way to memorize large portions of Scripture. I recommend reading the whole article. But the core of the article is this–read the passage aloud 50 times. The benefits? The author of the article writes:

I discovered that I had already memorized most of the passage I was trying to learn before I ever really started to try to memorize it.
I found out that the process of reading a passage over and over again in-and-of-itself became a wonderful means of God working his grace in my life.  I wasn’t just learning words, I was thinking about where the passage was going.  God used it to help me understand the passage better, to think about its implications in my life, […]

11 Prophesies of Jesus’ Lineage and Birth

We can take great comfort in the prophesies of Jesus’ lineage and birth. Some skeptics might argue that Jesus took the role of Messiah upon himself and was able to persuade others to follow him. However, these skeptics ignore the predictions made about the Messiah that Jesus had no way of controlling. We had no control over who our parents were and where we were born. In this Christmas season, take great comfort in the fulfillment of the prophesies. Scripture says The Messiah would be…

The Son of a Woman
And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.  Genesis 3:15

The Son of a Virgin
The Lord himself will give […]

Verse List – Is Anything too Hard for God?

Note: These verse lists are given as quick, topical studies to help moms and dads do studies on a date with their child, for family devotions, or for teens to do on their own.

Unbelief: Sarah’s laugh of unbelief (Genesis 18:12-13) still finds its equivalent today in cynicism or a resigned laugh toward God and our circumstances.

Response: The Lord responds with a gently, rebuking question: “Is anything too hard for the Lord? (Genesis 18:14), This theme of the power of God over impossible circumstances is repeated  many other places as well including:

Job 42:3 – I know that you can do all things.
Matthew 19:26 – With man this is impossible but with God all things are possible.
Luke 1:37 – Nothing is impossible with God.
Ephesians 3:20 – Now […]
