The 3Rs for Digging a Little Deeper in Your Devotional Time

Kevin DeYoung gives 3Rs to help dig a little deeper in your devotional time. Find something in each Scripture to

Rejoice
Repent
Request

So for this morning one verse I read was Psalm 25:1-15. For verse 4. Show me the right path, O Lord. Point out the road for me to follow.

1. Lord, I am so thankful that you are a God who guides, who points out the path, who hears prayers for guidance.

2. Please forgive me for the times that I have not requested aid. I have gone headstrong in my own way.

3. Specifically, show me the right path in ______________ . What would you have me to do?

Try it. Teach it to your children. Use it for family devotions.

Inquiring of the Lord

…So David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?” The Lord answered him, “Go…” 2 Samuel 5:19

A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his own opinions. Proverbs 18:2

Why does our relationship with God seem so one-sided at times? We are told that we speak to God in prayer and he speaks to us through his word, his Spirit within us, friends, etc. But why does the later part of that equation sometimes seem so forced? We may be speaking to God but it doesn’t seem like he is speaking to us.

On a human level, we all know people who talk too much. What becomes apparent over time is that […]

17 Teen Resolutions from John Piper

With everyone thinking about resolutions for the new year, here is repost from John Piper. Print down and review as needed.

1. Resolved: I will obey your instructions and do what I know you expect of me, even when it is not mentioned. I will not force you into repeated reminders, which I sometimes call nagging.

2. Resolved: I will not grumble or complain when I do my chores but remember what a great thing it is to have a family, a home, clothes, food, running water, electric lights, and central heating in a world where millions of teenagers have none of these.

3. Resolved: When I think your demands are unfair, I will move to do them first, and after showing an obedient attitude, I will ask if […]

Slaying the Bear – Heroism for Real Teens

The Lord how delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of the Philistine. 1 Samuel 17:37

Forget the little kids version of David and Goliath where a cartoon character kills another cartoon character. No this was a real story. A teenager was able to kill the most fearsome warrior of his day. After killing him with one rock, he took Goliath’s own sword, cut through his neck, and held his head high for all to see. In one moment, David became a true national hero.

But lift this out of the cartoon storybook quality and into real life. Look at David, a teenage boy. Perhaps 15, 16 or 17. What gave David the confidence […]

Deception 1 – God is Not Mocked

Don’t be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.  Galatians 6:7-8

The New Testament lists at least six ways that Christian can be deceived. To be deceived is to cause to think of something that is true that is indeed untrue. One of the six NT deceptions is that we will not reap what we sow;  that continued sin will have no consequences.

This is a common deception. Other teens, we think,  seem to be ignoring Christ and his way of living, and yet no lightning strikes them down. More than that, they actually […]
